Another self portrait, this time in oil, “Small Softie” is a tiny painting, and much like the name, it is soft in paint quality and small. The snail on the forehead takes on a different meaning, different responsibilities. Monochromatic tones saturate the painting with equal parts softness and harshness. If interpreted as the carrier of tears, why is the girl’s expression blank? Why is her hand on her cheek, her head tilted- is she posing for the viewer?
